Juniors (4-8) Football Practice Session Plan - One Hour

Overview

This one-hour practice session focuses on developing dribbling and ball control skills for young football players (ages 4-8). The session balances structured drills, skill development, and fun game-based activities to keep players engaged and motivated.

Session Timeline

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (5 minutes)

Objective

Get players energized and introduce the day's focus

  • Welcome & Explain Today's Focus (1 minute)
    • Gather all players and explain that today we're working on dribbling and keeping the ball close to our feet
    • Use simple language: "We're going to be ball friends today!"
  • Light Jogging & Dynamic Stretches (4 minutes)
    • Light jogging around the field (2 minutes)
    • High knees (1 minute)
    • Leg swings and arm circles (1 minute)

2. Ball Familiarity & Basic Dribbling (10 minutes)

Objective

Introduce basic dribbling technique and ball control

  • Individual Ball Touch (5 minutes)
    • Each player gets a ball
    • Players walk around the field, gently tapping the ball with alternating feet
    • Coach encourages players to keep their eyes on the ball and stay in control
    • Progress: Players can speed up to light jogging pace while dribbling
  • Cone Weaving (5 minutes)
    • Set up simple cone course (no sharp turns for this age group)
    • Players dribble through cones at their own pace
    • Emphasize keeping the ball close to their feet
    • Coach provides positive encouragement and tips on foot position

3. Dribbling Drill - "Traffic Lights" Game (12 minutes)

Objective

Develop ball control while responding to commands

  • Setup: Divide field into zones; each player has a ball
  • Instructions:
    • Green Light: Players dribble freely around the zone
    • Yellow Light: Players slow down and do small touches with the ball
    • Red Light: Players stop their ball completely (sole of foot on ball)
  • Duration & Progression:
    • Call out commands every 20-30 seconds randomly
    • Praise players who respond quickly and control their ball
    • Variation: Add direction changes (dribble backward, sideways) at each light
  • Coaching Tips:
    • Keep the pace fun and energetic
    • Ensure all players are engaged and have space
    • Celebrate great control and effort

4. Shark & Minnows Game (15 minutes)

Fun Game - Focus: Dribbling Under Pressure

This is the highlight activity - high engagement and competitive fun

  • Setup:
    • Define a large playing area (roughly 30m x 20m)
    • Select 1-2 players as "Sharks" (no ball)
    • Remaining players are "Minnows" (each with a ball)
  • Rules:
    • Minnows dribble around the area trying to keep their ball away from the Sharks
    • If a Shark tags a Minnow, the Minnow must give their ball to the Shark and becomes a new Shark
    • The tagged player continues playing but joins the Sharks in tagging
    • Play continues until the coach decides to end (usually 10-15 minutes)
  • Coaching Points:
    • Emphasize keeping the ball close when being chased
    • Encourage quick changes of direction
    • Make sure no player is "it" for too long - rotate Sharks if needed
    • Celebrate great dribbling saves and agile moves
  • Safety:
    • Ensure plenty of space and no obstacles
    • No full-contact tackling - only gentle tagging

5. One-Touch Passing & Ball Receiving (10 minutes)

Objective

Develop ball control and receiving technique with partners

  • Setup:
    • Pair players up
    • Pairs stand 5-8 meters apart
  • Drill - "Pass & Receive" (10 minutes)
    • Player A rolls/passes the ball to Player B
    • Player B receives the ball, takes one touch to control it, and passes it back
    • Emphasize: "Soft feet, watch the ball, control with your first touch"
    • Progression: Increase passing distance or speed after 5 minutes
    • Switch roles every 2-3 minutes
  • Coaching Tips:
    • Encourage players to use the inside of their foot for control
    • Celebrate good receiving technique
    • Keep it light and positive - this is skill-building

6. Follow the Leader Cool-Down (5 minutes)

Objective

Cool down while practicing dribbling in a fun, relaxed way

  • Setup:
    • One player (or coach) leads a line of players
    • All players dribble their balls following the leader around the field
  • Instructions:
    • Leader moves at a slow jog, making gentle curves and direction changes
    • All followers maintain control of their ball while following
    • Gradually slow the pace as the cool-down progresses
    • After 2-3 minutes, reduce to a walk

7. Wrap-Up & Celebration (3 minutes)

  • Gather players in a circle
  • Celebrate efforts:
    • "Great dribbling today! You all worked so hard on keeping the ball close!"
    • Highlight specific improvements or good plays you observed
  • Encourage participation:
    • Ask players what their favorite part was
    • Preview next session: "Next time we'll work on passing to our teammates!"
  • Fun send-off:
    • High-fives or team chant as players leave

Coach's Notes & Tips

Key Coaching Principles for Age 4-8

  • Keep it fun first: This age group learns through play. Make every drill feel like a game.
  • Use positive language: Encourage effort and progress, not perfection.
  • Short instructions: Explain activities in 20-30 seconds maximum. Show with demonstration.
  • Frequent breaks: Even though the session is structured, allow for water breaks and brief rest if needed.
  • Celebrate effort: Praise specific actions: "Great job keeping your ball close!" rather than generic praise.
  • Adapt on the fly: If something isn't working, modify it. This age group has short attention spans.

Equipment Checklist

  • 10-15 footballs (or more depending on group size)
  • 10-15 cones
  • Flat cones or markers for Shark & Minnows boundary (optional)
  • Whistle for getting attention quickly
  • Water bottles for hydration breaks

Safety Considerations

  • Ensure adequate space (minimum 30m x 20m for drills)
  • Check field for hazards (rocks, holes, uneven ground)
  • Keep first aid kit nearby
  • Supervise closely - this age group needs constant attention
  • No excessive pressure or competition - focus on fun and learning
